Dear Sir
Yours of  inst rcd relieving me &c for which please accept my thanks; thanks also for your flatering letter.
I turned over immediately all papers &c of importance to Mr Caldwell. He seemed entirely willing to take charge although he said to me that he had recd no Commission.
The Darkies are in trouble, or at least appear to be, at the change, Yet I hope he will see that they have Justice But what a man can want with such office is beyond my ken. Without pay or thanks, and sit from early Morn until dark and listen to, and settle the smallest cases imaginable. 
I will be in your Vilage in a day or two. Resfly Yours
