confidence in my Major, yet the regiment being in process of organization it requires some small portion of my attention. I shall not, however, permit any care I may exercise over the regiment to interfere with the sufficiently onerous duties of the position to which you have done me the honor to appoint me. If permitted to make the required change, I will place a most efficient and trustworthy officer of Knoxville, and frequently visit that station. I shall shortly have the honor of forwarding a list of officers appointed to the various stations in my district, and also report of my operations in the wide field of labor developed before me.
