see you and explain the matter which I did some weeks afterwards. Subsequently I received an order from you to forward a statement in writing of the time for which rent was due. I obeyed the order dating the period for which rent was due from the 1st June 66 as I then supposed the matter was fully explained. I did not at that time forward Vouchers for the time but did send Vouchers for the month of October '66. I received the pay on Oct. vouchers which I delivered to Mr. Merriman. I then moved into an office which I rented of Thos. J. [[Forlaw?]] and received pay on the Vouchers for the months of November & December '66 Those for the months of January & February '67 have been forwarded but not returned. When I forwarded the Vouchers for Feb. 67 I also enclosed Vouchers duly signed by Mr. Merriman dating them from June 1st 1866 to Sept. 30th 1866 Those Vouchers were returned to me to correct the date to the 8th of June '66 as the rent had been borne on the records of your office. You will undoubtedly recollect that the letter returning them was sealed up but opened and delivered to me the last time I had the pleasure of being in your office and as you thought it would cause some perplexity and delay at Raleigh I stated that I would correct the Vouchers as desired and pay the balance from my own pocket.
