To Bugadier General Faise ,
Freedmans Bureau,
Nashville Tenn.
Columbia,Tenne, July 14th 1865
We the undersigned citizens of Columbia and vicinity would respectfully state that, to the best of our knowledge information and belief, the school know as the Columbia Athenaum was not suspended or abandoned, during the late Rebellion. We regret to learn that it has been so reported to the Authorities. The trouble is, there has been a large Female School kept up, for the last thirteen years, at said Athenaum and the same was continued during said Rebellion, though on a smaller scale. The school has been managed and controled by Rector Smith and family with the exception of a part of the time when Rector Smith was absent from home. During this time, however, Mrs Smith continued the School and managed & controled the same.
