Lou McGills application, the case was referred to Lt. Col A Rutherford, Ass't Sup't So Dist N.C. Bureau Ref F & A Lands who decided for McGill to retain the mule,

Mrs Mary Pate makes complaint that a few days ago a Mr Marshall Merritt enticed from her a freedman whom she had contracted with to work during the summer of 1866.

April 4th. 66  Action

Wrote to Mr Marshall Merritt to either deliver up to Mrs Pate the man or appear before me and show just cause why he should not do so.  Mr Merritt appeared and produced satisfactory evidence that the man left of his own free will & on account of her won fullfillment of the contract with him, the said freedman

Peter Singleterry, freedman states that he worked for the Widow Singleterry during the Summer of 1865, that her son told him, if he would stay & gather the crop he would give him nine bushels of corn, which when gathered he refused to do.

April 6th. 66  Action

Wrote to Mrs Singleterry to settle with this man as her son had agreed to pay him, or to appear at this office & show just cause why she should not. She appeared & gave evidence which was satisfactory, that he "Peter" had been abundantly paid.

Stephen Guyon, freedman, makes complaint that he worked for Hayward Guyon of this co. during the summer of 1865. with the understanding that he was to be paid for his labor. The when the crop was gathered Mr. Guyon refused to give him (Stephen) any part of the crop.
