1942-(July 15-30) Exhibited school art work sent to Mills College at the Y.W.C.A. Cottage, Berkeley.

1942 - (July 27) Donated 24 paintings to the Center Hospital, Tanforan.


X1942 - (Aug. 8-9) Art School Anniversary party and entertainment. Exhibited paintings -- about 3000 persons attended.

1942 - (Sept. 5-7) Mardi Gras celebration and Tanforan. Exhibited paintings at Art and Hobby Show. Chairman of Mardi Cras Committee.

1942 - (Sept.) Exhibited students' and instructors' paintings at U.C. Some paintings were sent to Pasadena Art Institute on exhibit. 134 paintings. Gave lecture of various titles on Art Appreciation each week at the Art School, churches and recreation halls during the four months' stay in Tanforan Assembly Center

1942 - (Sept. 22) Left Tanforan for new relocation center in Topaz, Utah.

X1942 - (Sept. 27) Appointed as director of Topaz Art School by Dr. Laverne Bane, Adult Education.

1942 - (Oct. 16-18) Art Craft Show. Purpose to exhibit art craft to the Topaz Center administrators. The reason for the exhibit was: 1) due to climatic conditions there were only four months of growing season; 2) 80% of the residents are city people and such a project at industrial art would benefit the residents.

X1942 - (Oct. 26) Topaz Art School officially opened.

'1943 - (Feb.) Gave lecture and demonstration at Brigham Young Univ. at Provo Utah.

'1943 - (Feb.) Gave lecture and demonstration at Univ. of Utah, at Salt Lake City.

'1943 - (Feb.) Gave lecture and demonstration at Literary Club in Salt Lake City.

'1943 - (Mar.) Gave lecture and demonstration at Hinkley Utah.

'1943 - (Mar.) Gave lecture and demonstration at Oak City, Utah.

'1943 - (May) J.A.C.L. presented silk painting entitled "Evening Scene of Topaz" to Mr. Dillon Myer, executive director of W.R.A.

X1943 - (May) J.A.C.L. presented silk painting entitled "Topaz Morning Scene" to Mr. Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

1943 - (May) Won First Prize and Special Award for best landscape with silk painting entitled "New Moon" at the Relocation Art Exhibit held by Friends Meeting at Cambridge, Mass.

1943 - (May) Presented water color paintings to Washington Univ. Architectural School, St. Louis, Mo.

1943 - (June) His family left the Topaz relocation center and resettled with him in Webster Grove, Mo.

During the eleven month period of evacuation, April 30, 1942, when left Berkeley, until April, 1943, when left Topaz, Utah, painted more than 500 paintings; the results of a deep appreciation of natural surroundings and form the human interest angle.

1944 - (April) Visited Detroit; Academy of Art (Cranbrook), Bloomfield, Michigan; University of Michigan, at Ann Arbor, Michigan, for sketching trip.

1944 - (May) Painted and dedicated large wall mural at Y.W.C.A., Washington University, St. Louis, Mo., entitled, "Dawn in Missouri".

1944 - (June) Worked as commercial artist, introducing his free-hand brush style in large mural backdrops.

1944 - (August) Painted large mural about 400 feet square entitled, "Peaceful Japan" for Mr. John Wolff, La Due, Mo.

1945 - (Jan.) Wrote letter to Provost Dr. Monroe Deutsch, asked to resume old teaching position as soon as Army would give permission to return to west coast

1945 - (June) President Sproul granted request, and Mr. Obata returned to old position. During stay at St. Louis, Mo., gave public lectures, freehand demonstrations and exhibitions at many places -- Methodist Church, Rotary Club, University Woman's Club of Washington University, and Artists League of St. Louis.
