POST GAZETTE JUNE 15, 1939 Famous Chinese Aviatrix Arrives at Airport Today Ya Ching Lee, Flying Here for Three-Day Visit, To Get Big Welcome; Addresses Scheduled. Miss Ya-Ching Lee, Chinese aviatrix who is making an aerial tour of America in behalf of Chinese civilian relief, will fly her cabin ship, "The Spirit of New China," to the county airport this morning at 10:30 o'clock for a three-day visit to Pittsburgh. Her arrival will be greeted by Mayor Scully, a committee of Pittsburgh aviators, and a committee of Americans and Chinese led by Chancellor John G. Bowman, of the University of Pittsburgh. Three planes flown by Frances Allen, Theresa James and Russell F. Hay, will meet Miss Lee's ship outside the city and escort her to the airport. After a motorcade procession to the city, Miss Lee will be guest of honor at the Aero Club luncheon in the Hotel Henry at noon. Pittsburgh "Friends of China" who have contributed to civilian relief in China, will welcome her at a feast of Chinese food in the Leong Temple. Tomorrow at noon Miss Lee will speak at the Shriners' luncheon in the William Penn Hotel, and in the afternoon will broadcast from a local radio station. At night she will address a mass meeting in the First Unitarian Church, Ellsworth and Moorehead avenues, at 8 o'clock. Miss Lee's tour is sponsored by a national committee for China's Civilian Relief with headquarters in Washington. The Right Reverend Monsignor George Barry O'Toole, formerly rector of the Catholic University, Peiping, China, is secretary treasurer of the committee. The local committee includes representatives from the Committee for Boycott Against Japanese Aggression: Mrs. John M. Phillips, Mrs. David Alter, Mrs. Harry C. Hill, Dr. George D. Tyson, University of Pittsburgh; Dr. H. H. Lowry, director of the Coal Research Laboratory of Carnegie Tech; Frederick McKee, the group's president; Bim Faye Lee, Miss New Gee Lee and others. Assisting this committee are members of the Chinese Benevolent Association and the Chinese Institute of Pittsburgh, which is comprised largely of Chinese students. CLIPPING FROM MCKEESPORT (PA) NEWS JUNE 14, 1939 Chinese Girl Flier To Arrive Tomorrow Pretty Miss Ya-Ching Lee, known as the "Amelia Earhart of China", will arrive at County Airport tomorrow at approximately 10 a. m. for a two-day visit in the district. She will be escorted to the airport by three planes flown by district aviators. While here, Miss Lee will speak before several audiences in behalf of Chinese relief. At noon tomorrow, she will be guest of the Aero Club at its weekly luncheon in the Hotel Henry, Pittsburgh. On Leong Temple, Pittsburgh, will be the scene of a banquet in her honor during the evening. She will address the Shriners Friday noon at the William Penn Hotel and in the evening is scheduled to appear at the First Unitarian Church, Pittsburgh. Mrs. Louise Thaden, district flyer, is chairman of the church program. Jacqueline Cochran Gets Flier's Trophy New York, June 15 (AP) - Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt Thursday presented the Harmon aviatrix trophy to Jacqueline Cochran for the second year in succession as "the world's outstanding woman flier." In addition, Miss Chochran, who in private life is Mrs. Floyd Odlum was awarded a medal stamped in memory of the late King Alber of Belgium--the first American to receive it.
