CHINA'S WOMEN HELP DEFENSE

Oriental Aviatrix Here To Seek Support of Relief Campaign.

China's women--from granmothers with bound feet to Chinese Girl Scouts--are sharing in the defense of their homeland equally with the men, and are exercising greater social and economic rights than they did before the war begain in 1937, according to Miss See Ya Ching, China's first woman flier.
The Chinese aviatrix was scheduled to make two appearances today at the Toledo Club at a luncheon and at a 7 p.m. dinner before civic and business leaders to invoke their support of the local United China Relief campaign for funds to provide medical relief, refugee rehabilitation and economic reconstruction in war-torn China. Miss Lee arrived in Toledo yesterday in her own monoplane.
Miss Lee said today that the program for female suffrage, put into effect by the Chinese Republic to rescue China's women from their backward state under the old Manchu rule, is going ahead faster than planned because China's women are playing an unprecedented role in the country's defensive struggle against the Japanese.
Yesterday Miss Lee spoke at a United CHina Relief luncheon in the Toledo Club where a score of men and women gathered at the invitation of Ward Canaday, chairman of the Toledo committee participating in the $5,000,000 national fundraising drive. She was introduced by Mrs. Frank S. Lewis, chairman of the Toledo committee's women division.
Harold H. Hartley, managing editor of the Toledo Times, will preside at tonight's dinner at the Toledo Club.
Miss Lee will be feted tonight at 10:30 by the Chinese Emergency Relief Association of Toledo at an oriental party in the Kin Hong Low Restaurant, 814 Jefferson Avenue, it was announced by Charles Lewis, head of the association.
Toledo's entire Chinese population of 140 men, women and children will be present.
