THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY CONTRIBUTES TO WAR RELIEF FUNDS.
Mrs. Thomas Lamont
[crossed out] Mrs. Lawrence Tibbett [crossed out], representing the American Red Cross; Lieutenant-Colonel John H. Auerbach, representing the Army Relief Society; Lt. Commander A. G. Rudd, representing the Navy Relief Society; and Miss Lee Ya-Ching, representing the Chinese Relief Society accepted for their organizations substantial checks presented at a luncheon given in their honor by the Beauty Industry Council at the Columbia University Club today.

The Beauty Industry Council, a national organization, was formed approximately a year ago for the purpose of raising funds for an "all out" campaign within the industry to promote the sale of war Savings Stamps and Bonds. Contributions to the fund were made by manufacturers, wholesale supply deal3ers and industry associations from all over the United States. The campaign was designed to promote the sale of stamps and bonds by beauty shop owners to their patrons and employees and it featured the well known slogan "Be the Woman Behind the Man Behind the Gun". Edna L. Emme of St. Louis, Missouri, President of the National Hairdressers and Cosmetologists Association, was appointed Chairman of the Council by the United States Treasury Department and, according to her report, the industry was successful in selling several million dollars worth of stamps and bonds.

A Finance Committee charged with the raising of the funds necessary to defray the cost of producing the campaign literature for the shops of the country was appointed and consisted of Neal R. Andrews, President of Sales Affiliates, Inc., Benjamin F. Breslauer, president of A. Breslauer, Inc. and Joseph Byrne, Secretary of the Beauty and Barber Supply Institute, Inc.

Because the generous contributions received exceeded by a substantial amount of sum required for the stamp and bond campaign the contributors voted to donate the surplus to the American Red Cross, The Army Relief Society, the Navy Relief Society and the Chinese Relief Society -- and these four organizations received their substantial contributions at the luncheon held today.

Neal R. Andrews who recently returned from Washington Where he held the position of Chief, Used Equipment Division, War Production Board, acted as Toastmaster. Benjamin F. Breslauer, Treasurer of the Fund and a member of the Advisory Committee, Cosmetics Division, War Production Board, presented the checks to the four representatives of the Relief Societies. During the presentation ceremonies Mr. Breslauer indicated that the campaign for the sale of stamps and bonds had been so well organized and executed, and the beauty axxxb shops had cooperated so splendidly that thexxaxx sale of stamps within this industry was now exceeding $500,000.00 monthly with that amount having been far exceeded during the month of April.
