Dear Sir
I have the honor to acknowledge that sent of yours of 15th inst containing an appointment as agent of the freedmens Bureau for this County (Meade)of Ky. Which appointment I accept and shall at once enter upon the discharge of my duty

The Manual of Instruction you spoke of will probably point out what is to become of the many women and children that are thrown upon the country without homes that are to be provided for by some means, in many instances the mothers can't provide for their children. The state so far has made no provision by which they can be bound but how does it stand with the bureau

in the discharge of my duty I shall look to the interest of all consensus and endeavor to promote peace and Harmony between the freedmen and the whites. I would be pleased to hear from

Very respectfully
yours
E.C. Ashcraft
