Upon a second conversation with Col. Davis to whom we have read the foregoing, he informed us that we misunderstood him as claiming a lien in law for this money in favor of the freedmen but merely a quasi-equitable lien. Also that he can not hold it as a lien to secure the re-payment of the $125 paid to Woods, but simply as a necessity of the freedman's bureau for the purpose of having a free black school on said premises.
