Sir

I received last night the communication of R. C. Scott, Ast. Supt. of Freedmen in Haywood County Ten. with your endorsement thereon referring the same to me for information, with which request I most cherfully comply.

My uncle Ex Govr. David Campbell of Abingdon Va. departed this life in March 1859 leaving all his property real and personal in trust to me for the sole use and benefit of his wife during her lifetime. The slaves were all kept together at the homestead until the death of the widow, which occurred in Novr. 1859.

By his will he emancipated servant David, & in the same expressly refused to emancipate any other of his servants. By the will he devised $:1000.- to me to be distributed to such of his grown servants, as I should regard as most deserving giving however out of this devise $:250 to his servant David. By a codicil to said will he made a further devise of $:1000.- to me to be distributed to his servants David, Lucy & Francis in such portions as I shall consider their services merit. He also directed that on the death of his wife, his servants should be sold to masters of their own selection, which was done in
