(f) The applicant must be a certificated pilot (or pilot in the aeronautical branches of the U. S. 
Government), holding or having held within the last 2 years, an instrument rating (for military or naval 
pilots, pilot must be rated by his immediate superior as properly qualified for instrument flying); or
(g) The applicant must be a certificated pilot (or pilot in the aeronautical branches of the U. S. Government), with a record of not less than 500 flying hours in the last 5 years, of which not less than 250 hours were in cross-country flying, with not less than 25 hours of cross-country flying accomplished in each of the last 2 years.

NOTE.-The last 2, 3, or 5 years, whichever the case may be, as used above, means immediately preceding the closing date for receipt of applications specified in (b) at the head of this announcement.
Only experience acquired prior to the closing date for receipt of applications specified in (b) at the head of this announcement can be considered for this examination. New or additional evidence of qualifications, not submitted in connection with the original rating, may be considered only in case a review of such rating is requested within 30 days after the notice of rating is mailed to the competitor, and on condition that such evidence is received by the Commission within this 30-day period or within 30 days from the date the Commission requests such evidence, if necessary or desirable in connection with the review of original rating. For applicants residing in Alaska, Hawaii, or other points outside the continental limits of the United States, the periods specified above shall be 90 days instead of 30 days.

3. Age limit.-Applicants must not have passed their fifty-third birthday on the closing date for receipt of applications specified in (b) at the head of this announcement.
The age limit does not apply to persons granted military preference because of military or naval service, nor to permanent employees in the classified civil service, except that such applicants must not have reached the retirement age. Employees in the classified civil service for whom the age limit is waived and who are not entitled to military preference will be eligible only for the entry of their names on the separate list of eligible Government employees referred to in the paragraph headed "Employment lists."
Applicants who attain eligibility and are selected for appointment must furnish proof of date of birth to the appointing officer at the time of reporting for duty. Applicants should not submit such proof to the Civil Service Commission. An extension of time for furnishing proof of date of birth, not to exceed 56 months after appointment, may be granted upon satisfactory evidence that additional time is necessary. Notices of rating sent to eligible will contain further information
4. Physical ability.-Applicants must be in sound physical health. Remediable defects or curable disease will not exclude a person from examination, but proof that such defects have been remedied, or the disease, if any, cured, must be received during the life of the eligible register before persons otherwise qualified may be considered for appointment under civil-service rules.
Vision must be at least 20/30 (Snellen) in one eye, and 20/14 (Snellen) in the other, glasses permitted. The applications of persons who have uncorrected vision of less than 20/200 (Snellen) in either eye, corrected to meet the above requirement, will be suspended and they will not be eligible for appointment until satisfactory evidence has been presented to the Commission showing that there is no disease or defect of the eye other than an error of refraction. Ordinary conversation must be heard at a distance of at least 15 feet, with each ear. 
Upper and lower extremities must be present in entirety except that loss of fingers and toes not interfering with function will not be cause for rejection.
Speech must be normal and without accent which will interfere with two-way telephone or other conversation in clear and lucid English.
A rigid physical examination will be made by a Federal medical officer before appointment. Persons who are offered appointment must pay their own expenses in reporting for duty. If, upon reporting at the place of assignment, they are found ineligible because of physical defects, they cannot be appointed and no part of their expenses for returning home can be borne by the Government.
Applicants must file Application Form 8 excluding the Officer's Certificate of Residence, and Supplemental Form 3360, both properly executed, with the United States Civil Service Commission, Washington, D. C., not later than the closing date specified at the head of this announcement.
Photographs.-Applicants must submit to the examiner on the day of the examination their photographs, taken within 2 years, with their names written thereon, and securely attached in the space provided on the admission cards sent them after their applications are filed. Proofs or group photographs will not be accepted. Photographs will not be returned to applicants
Veteran preference.-Applicants who wish to claim veteran preference must file, in addition to Applicant Form 8 and Supplemental Form 3360, Preference Form 14 (blue), properly executed and accompanied by the documentary proof required therein. Failure to submit such evidence promptly may result in loss of opportunity to be considered for appointment. 
Oral examination.-Competitors attaining an initial eligible rating in Subjects 1 and 2, shown under "Basis of ratings" above, may be required to report for oral examination, as stated above, which examination will be held at points as convenient for competitors as conditions will permit. The purpose of the oral examination is to adduce particular evidence of demonstration of possession of the following qualifications which will be utilized in the performance of the duties of the position: 
1. Ability to accept and fulfill responsibility.
2. Ability to make prompt and sound decisions in emergencies and under difficult conditions.
3. Ability to cooperate with, and to gail cooperation from superiors, associates, and air personnel generally.
4. Observable personal characteristics, including presence, self-expression, and comprehension.
Certification.-Certification to fill vacancies in this position will be made of the highest eligibles on the register from the entire country who have not expressed unwillingness to accept appointment where the vacancy exists. The department or office requesting certification of eligibles has the legal right to specify the sex desired. For this position the Civil Aeronautics Authority requires men. 
Fingerprints.-Fingerprints will be taken of all persons appointed from this examination.
Application forms.-The necessary forms may be obtained from the Secretary, Board of United States Civil Service Examiners, at any first- or second-class post office, from the United States Civil Service Commission, Washington, D. C., or from the United States civil service office at any of the cities given below (the title of the examination desired should be stated):
