B. STARTING ENGINES (Cont'd)

14. With COLD engines, if the engine has failed to start and there is no odor or vapor of fuel in the exhaust, the engine has probably been insufficiently primed. (EVEN THOUGH FUEL MAY BE DRAINING FROM THE BLOWER DRAIN VALVE.)

15. OVERPRIMING should be avoided, if possible, as it can cause delays in starting, and can damage the cylinder, piston and rings by washing the cylinder walls free from any lubrication. It also contributes to a fire hazard due to collection of raw fuel in the blower section and exhaust collector.

16. If engine still doesn't start after the first or second attempt, investigate for other causes.

17. Warm engines that have been shut down briefly as at an enroute stop usually do not require prime. Operate starter and booster switches for engine to be started. If the engine starts immediately, move the mixture control to "Auto Rich". If the engine does not start immediately, prime lightly. If starting is not accomplished in approximately the next five seconds while the mixture control is in "IDLE CUT OFF", continue to turn the engine with the starter, maintaining fuel pressure with booster pumps or hand wobble pumps and repeat procedure.

18.If an engine does start but runs erratically, it is permissable [[permissible]] to depress the priming switch for several seconds or until the engine runs smoothly. Fuel pressure should be maintained by use of the booster pumps.

19. After starting the field side engine proceed to start the ramp side engine in like manner. 

20. Turn master battery switch "ON" as cart is removed or on airplanes equipped with "Cart Battery" switch positions, place switch in "Plane Battery" position after engines have started.

C. STOPPING ENGINES

1. Propeller pitch controls shall be left in low pitch position as engines are stopped.
