pumping plant in June 1947. At present, only the southern half of Queens is still supplied by privately owned wells.

In Nassau County, where the population has increased from 70,000 to more than 600,000 in the last 45 years, pumpage for strictly local public ranged from 4 mgd in 1904 to more than 52 mgs in 1948. Withdrawals by New York City and local system average 71 mgd for 1904-1948 but were as high as 101 mgd in 1912 and 1916; and 96 mgd in 1931 and 1942. Indications are that public water-supply pumps in Nassau County during 1949 surpassed the previous high record by at least two or three million gallons per day, more than 60 mgd being consumed within the County.
