Editorial, continued

Thousands of volunteer hours have been scheduled for a couple of hundred volunteers, EARA members, their relatives and friends, providing Eastern with help in a large number of programs and work areas: the United Way campaign, blood drives and health fairs for its employees, the retiree pass department, insurance administration, accounting and financial areas, communications, security, library, the pilot re-entry program, and many, many more; an excellent way to satisfy the desire of our members "To Help Eastern."

EARA has long believed that a retiree seminar would be a most productive and meaningful way of focusing corporate attention on the concerns of the Eastern retiree. While EARA does service its members' queries in a low-key manner, dramatic changing conditions at Eastern do increase retiree benefits' concerns. The frustrations associated with the inability to be able to reach the (closed) retiree pass department by telephone or in person (only mail contact is permitted), the questionable efficiency level of processing medical claims, understanding EAL retiree benefits' policy matters, etc., do strengthen our interest in developing a means toward better communication and service to all retirees. So we do continue to direct about a third of our time to this area of our interests, and we will keep all retirees. So we do continue to direct about a third of our time to this area of our interests, and we will keep all retirees advised of EARA progress in this direction.

While we voluntarily pursue our main objectives, we do so with a feeling of gratitude for being able to avail ourselves of the many opportunities inherent in our physical presence at EAL headquarters in Miami. EARA is grateful for so many benefits and privileges accorded it by EAL in return for the "Why We Are" activity we've talked about here. And we accept such benefits with a great sense of responsibility to Eastern to conduct ourselves with a sense of appreciation wrapped in a modus operandi of involving our volunteer members in a manner which enhances the quality of our image in the way we do things, for the mutual benefit of the EARA member and EAL.

But we must so involve ourselves with the keen awareness of the fact that ours, EARA, is not to impose, infringe or execute the responsibility of Eastern Airlines to all retirees. Ours, EARA, is to support Eastern, and through that effort, benefit our membership, and all retirees, in a sophisticated, professional way.

As a result, it is EARA's hope that "What We Are", and what we do will contribute highly to the dignity and respect of all eastern retirees everywhere.
We trust you agree.
