"RED" DABNEY COMES THRU
WITH ALL-AMERICAN TEAM

Tuskegee, Ala., Jan. 11.--The close of the 1923 football season saw another champion enthroned. Howard went through her 1923 schedule without tasting defeat. Lincoln, as usual, met her "Jinx" when she played Hampton in Baltimore. For the first time in the history of Hampton has one of her teams played on a field in a big city. No new mentors graced the gridiron this fall. Several fell below their former performances and were still able to perform better than their opponents. Sam Peyton of Howard was looked upon as a new mentor by his performance at Northwestern last year, but he failed to star in any of the big games. Nevertheless, he played a good, consistent game. All of the teams with the exception of Lincoln seemed to hit their stride and go stale before the season was over, and at Thanksgiving time Lincoln was going stronger than at any time during the year and should have at least beat Howard by two touchdowns.

There was a full field of good players, but these were outstanding in their positions and showed enough aggressiveness to be placed on any varsity in either the eastern or southern circuit.
Clay and Williams are good ends and stood out on the defense. Gains were seldom made around their ends. Both are good receivers of the forward pass. Coleman and Coston are the best tackles in the country, and sometimes it seemed that they were playing in their opponents' backfield.
Winfield and Cook played consistent games and both were good hole-openers. Leak, Pindle, Tadlock and Morgan are great centers, but to Leak of Atlanta U. go the honors, he being the lastest man on any of the lines. He was a wizard when it came to getting down the field on punts and getting into the interference on Coach Aikens' reverse end run. It was a good sight to see him take out secondary defense men. The other men are all good, but for all-around playing Leak was the best man.
To Byrd of Lincoln goes the honor of quarterback, he being the best ground [[gather?]] playing that position and unequaled in [[general?]]ship.

Five home games are announced with a possibility of a sixth. The locals are booked for a trip to either Columbus or Cincinnati to play Wilberforce. The "classic" will be played in Washington.

Doneghy of Howard was the out-standing star at fullback, being the best triple-threat man in the league. "Whirlwind" Johnson, "Bulldog" Williams of Hampton, Stevens of Tuskegee and Williams of Atlanta U. were all good men in this position, but Doneghy was the star of the year.
Gunn of Hampton is forced by his punting to be placed on any team. His puting is superb, outpointing that of any of the kickers in the field today in Colored football circle, and he is the best drop-kicker seen in years.
Johnson of Fisk goes in the other half. Johnson is a natural football player, being the best pass thrower in the country, and it was through his playing that the Fisk team has been able to pull themselves together when in many a tight place.

ALL-SOUTHERN TEAM
Clay.....Atlanta U.......End
Long......Fisk..Tackle
Winfield.....Morris Brown...Guard
Leak......Atlanta U......Center
Cook.......Morehouse.....Guard
Kitchen......Tuskegee.......Tackle
Starr.....Morehouse......End
Stevens......Tuskegee.....Q. B.
Williams......Atlanta U.......H. B.
Kelly.......Morehouse......F. B.
Johnson........Fisk......H. B.

These players have stood head and shoulders above their opponents. Edwards of Morris Brown is the best punter in the South. Tadlock is the most aggressive center in the South. Leak is only selected for his speed and experience. The southern circuit is in need of good officials--men that are unbiased and that will football decisions regardless of friendship or school. The sooner an association is formed, with rules covering the game, the sooner the game will take its place among the foremost sports of the South and will be better attended and gambling be eliminated.
