Murfreesboro Tenn.
October 27th 1866

Lieutenant, 
I have the honor to report that while stopping over night with one Ben Roney, a country tavern keeper in Sumner Co. Tenn on the Nashville and Louisville Pike twenty-nine (29) miles from Nashville. I heard from his lips a story of such revolting inhuman brutality practiced upon the person of a colored woman - name unknown - in his employ. That I determined to bring it to the notice of your office.
This Roney is a justice of the peace commissioned by Andrew Johnson while Governor of Tennessee, but now judging from his conversation with one of his own kind a Square Hudson of Edgefield he is filled and running over with
