R. & F. Dispensary
Nashville Tenn March 10th 1866

Mayor Brown

Sir:-
I have the honor to report to you three cases of small pox in a colored family in Edgefield, whom I was called upon to visit yesterday and found in a very destitute and deplorable condition. The mother has died of the disease, also one of the children, whom I found lying in the house for some time, with its face almost completely eaten off by rats. From the dictates of a common humanity, I feel encouraged to hope, for the honor of this community, that such cases do not often find a parallel -

I respectfully request that you cause the above patients to be removed without unnecessary delay, to the city Pest house, where they can be properly cared for. They reside near the house of Mr. Sanford of First National Bank in Edgefield.

Very Respectfully
Your Obed. Servant
