pose, and much good may be done thereby. There is however in this section but little intemperance among the freedmen. The whites do the major part of the drinking and monopolize the privalege of being idle. 
The freedmen are industrious and but few are found who do not cordially acknowledge it. Occasionally however a man is found, who lost heavily by the emancipation of the blacks, who will aver with a very long hypocritical face, that since the negroes have left the fatherly care of their masters, they have been going steadily to destruction and are now eking out a most miserable existance. My observation however convinces me, that the freedmen are really doing well in the section & that the people and the Courts are doing better by them their at any time in the past.
