I came from Memphis to Union City where I found things as follows. a great deal of talk but nothing else scarcely done. they have raised some fifty dollars toward buying the lot which will cost them from $100.00 to $150.00 the negroes there think they can raise the balance of the money altho the whites are of the impression that the have raised all they can. I find money very scarce. I left U City and came to this place on yesterday find things much worse here  nothing has been raised towards building, they are going to try today and raise something. If they raise a sufficient sum to purchase the lot and finish the House I will commence it tomorrow if not I go to U city and see what they have done, and in case they have have done nothing shall I return to Nashville. I would respectfully request that you write me immediately on receipt of this at Union City and tell me what I am to do. This is the very worse time in my opinion for commencing school houses, money being very scarce and the colored people not receiving much for their crops it will be with the utmost difficulty that
