Capt H I Brown
Asst and General

Captain

I have the honer to
report for the month of June 1866
There have been several cases for adjudication
brought before the magistrates here (for freedman)
I think the magistrates and other civil officers
intend to live up to the Law. They are very
backward about issuing warrants but they did not refuse, if the Negro had to attend to it
for himself he would stand a fair chance,
the people frighten them by telling them it
will cost them all their wages or if they
attempt to secure their rights by Law
There was one case here yesterday between freemen
in which four lawyers were engaged the lawyers worked as hard as if they were working
for white clients. Ample justice was done in
the case

I think everything is going on here as well as
well as could be expected

Respectfully yours
