Colonel,
I have the honor to request transportation from Raleigh to Selma, Alabama for Horace Lane aged 31 years, and his wife Caroline aged 35 years. This man came from Selma last fall while in Georgia had his pocket picked and $500.00 taken from him which he had made in working Cotton crop. His object in coming here was in search of his Father, whom he left in Raleigh when he was sold, on arriving here he found his Father had been sold before the war, and was taken to Chattanooga. He designed to help his Father and return to Selma. He is now without any means and can get nothing to do in this region. He wishes to get back to Selma in time for a crop. He does not wish to get transportation free but as a loan which he will pay next fall. His whole demeanor and appearance indicate a will to perform what he agrees to do. From what I have seen of him for the few months I am induced to strongly recommend that transportation be given him as a loan to be returned as above. The case and circumstances I think worthy of trust and to trial.
Very Respectfully
