Freedman Labor Contract

This indenture made and entered into on the 15th day of Dec AD 1866. between W. A. Barrier of the county of Cabarrus and State of N. Carolina of the first part and Toney Richardson, wife Mary and two children Ann and Colin freed Laborers, of the second part witnesseth that the said Toney, Mary, Ann & Colin have agreed to work for the said W. A. Barrier from this date to the 1st day of Jan 1868 on his farm in the state of Tenn - and so do all kinds of labor common to the county and to do all other kinds of labor that it is deemed necessary to be done, to do this work faithfully and to be respectfully in his behavior and that they shall receive Two Hundred and Forty five Dollars on the 1st day of Jan 1868 on a part payment as soon as the crops
are gathered and sold. May the said Toney wife Mary and children Ann and Colin further agree that time lost by Idlenys [[idleness]] absence without leave or sickness shall not be fined for  and the said W. A. Barrier have agreed to furnish the said freedman with comfortable quarters sufficient Rations and the amount of money above stated and transportation to his farm free of charge And the said Toney, wife Mary and children are to furnish their own clothing and pay their Doctor Bills
