State of N. Carolina { Freedman Labor Contract

This Indenture made and entered into on the 25 day of Dec AD. 1866 between WA Barrien of the County of Cabarrus of the first part and Joseph Spnell a freedman of the Second part. Witnesseth - that he the said Joseph Spnell a freedman has agreed to work for the said WA. Barrien farm this date to the 1st day of Jan A.D. 1868 on his farm in the State of Tenn - and to do all Kinds of work common to the farm of the Country and all other Kinds of labor that it is deemed necessary to be done, to do this work faithfully and to be respectfull [[respectful]] in his behavior, and he the said Jseph Spnell freedman shall ricieve [[receive]] One Hundred and twenty two dollars on the 1st day of Jan 1868 or a part payment as soon as the crops are gathered and sold, He the said Joseph Spnell further agrees that time lost by idleness or absence without leave or sickness shall not be paid for. And the said WA Barrien has agreed to pay the amount above stated furnish sufficient rations and comfortable quarters and transportation to his farm free of charge. 

And the said Joseph Spnell is to furnish his clothing and pay his Doctor Bill.
