State of N. Ca.  Freedman Labor Contract.
Anson Cty. 

This Indenture made and entered into on the 25th day of Dec AD. 1866 between WA Barrien of the County of Cabarrus and State of N. Carolina of the first part and Rafe Marshall a freedman of the Second part. Witnesseth. that he the said Rafe Marshall a freedman of the and his children Laura and Charles have agreed to work for the said WA. Barrien from this date to the 1st day of Jan A.D. 1868 on his farm in the State of Tenn - And to do all Kinds of work common to the farms of the Country and all other Kinds of labor that it is deemed necessary to be done - to do this work faithfully and to be respectful in his behavior, and they shall receive $125.00 One Hundred and Twenty five Dollars on the 1st day of Jan A.D. 1868 or a part payment as soon as the crops are gathered and sold. And the said Rafe Marshall and children, Laura & Charles further agree that time lost by Idleness or absence without leave or sickness shall not be paid for. 
And the said WA. Barrien have agreed to furnish the said Rafe Marshall and children Laura and Charles, with comfortable quarters sufficient Rations and the Amount of money above stated and Transportation to his farm free of charge, 

And the said Rafe Marhsall and children Laura & Charles are to furnish their own clothing and pay their Doctor Bills. In testimony whereof the above parties set their hands and seal
