State of N. Ca  Freedman Labor Contract
Anson Cty.

This Indenture made and entered into on the 25th day of Dec AD 1866 between WA. Barrien of the County of Cabarrus and State of N.C. of the 1st part and Louis Watkins a freedman of the Second part Witnesseth -  that he the said Louis Watkins a freedman has agreed to work for the said WA Barrien from this date to the 1st day of Jan A.D. 1867 [[strikethrough]] between [[/strikethrough]] on his farm in the State of Tenn and to do all Kinds of work common to the farms of the Country and all other Kinds of labor  that it is deemed necessary to be done, to do this work faithfully and to be respectful in his behavior, and he the said Louis Watkins a freedman shall receive and shall receive $75.00, seventy five dollars on the 1st day of Jan A.D. 1868 or a part payment as soon as the crops are gathered and sold, He the said Louis Watkins a freedmen further agrees that time lost by Idleness or absence without leave or sickness shall not be paid for. And the said W.A. Barrien has agreed to furnish the said Louis Watkins with comfortable quarters sufficient rations and  transportation to his farm free of charge and the amount of money above stated. And the said Louis Watkins a freedman is to furnish his own clothing and pay his Doctor bills. In testimony whereof the above parties set their hands and seal.
