The following Contract and agreement is this day made and entered into between Burrell T. Pugh, of the first part, and James Miller and Sallie Miller, freed laborers, of the second part, all of the County and State aforesaid: The said Burrell T. Pugh agrees to furnish the said freed laborers with houses for themselves and family, sufficient land to cultivate, stock to run two plows, feed for said stock and farming utensils for and during the year 1866 and the said freed laborers agree to furnish themselves with provisions, medical attendance and clothing and after the crop shall be produced, gathered and put in a marketable condition they agree to give to the said Burrell T. Pugh one-half thereof.  And the said freed laborers furthermore agree to work diligently and faithfully and conduct themselves properly and obey the said B.T. Pugh in all matters relating to the farm for and during the year 1866 and the said Pugh agrees to protect them in the quiet enjoyment of their rights as freedmen while they remain with him. This contract is to remain in full force and virtue until the 31st day of December 1866. In testimony whereof we have hereunto put our hands and seals this the 1st day of January A.D. 1866.
