Know all men by these presents that I Marshall. T. Polk of Hardeman County Tennessee of the first part & Marcus Joy & children, Free Persons of Color of the State & County aforesaid of the second part; are held & firmly bound in the following contract for services to be rendered by said Marcus Joy & children to said Marshall. T. Polk aforesaid–
Viz-
That Marshall. T. Polk will furnish the said Marcus Joy & children as much good land not exceeding 40 acres as they can cultivate, for the present year – Also Marshall. T. Polk will furnish farm stock, mules or horses, ploughs, harness & wagon to [[strikethrough]] supply [[/strikethrough]] have fire wood, in sufficient amount to cultivate what land will be allotted Said Marcus Joy to feed the farm animals – to supply the said Joy with good & wholesome food for himself & children in sufficient quantity to furnish a home for said Joy & Children & to give them such medicines as may be given by said Polk in his judgment suited to the family. That said Polk will & does hereby bind himself that upon the faithful discharge of the following duties – to wit - To rise in time & cause his children to
