Hi ladies and gentlemen, I just want to welcome you to the Storytelling Stage of the Festival of American Folklife,
[00:00:14]
{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
where we're featuring the wide variety of stories that make up New York City.
[00:00:20]
{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
And we're very proud today to have so many of the supposed 8 million stories in the naked city featured here.
[00:00:28]
{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
And one of the things we're doing is, we're collecting oral histories, we're taping all of these sessions here on the stage,
[00:00:36]
{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
and we're trying to kind of get a sense of what the world of New Yorkers is like; what the history is of the different cultural forms that are part of New York.
[00:00:45]
{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
And what we're doing here today is we've selected two of the forms that make New York City really distinctive.
[00:00:52]
{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
One of them is the wonderful murals in New York that grew out of the graffiti on subway trains -- a generation ago or half a generation ago -- many of the people doing murals now started that way.
[00:01:03]
{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
And we're also looking at another aspect of the city's visual portrait, which is neon.
[00:01:09]
{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
And to introduce the neon sign makers and graffiti artists and muralists that we have here today,
[00:01:17]
{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
I have Elena Martínez, who works with me at City Lore who's gonna serve as a host,
[00:01:22]
{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
through some of the stories a part of making the New York City image what it is.
[00:01:30]
{SPEAKER name="Speaker 1"}
Thank you very much.
[00:01:32]
[[applause]]
[00:01:38]
{SPEAKER name="Elena Martínez"}
Hi. Today we're going to talk about themes of art and urban life in New York City, and
[00:01:44]
{SPEAKER name="Elena Martínez"}
we have with us Gaspar Ingui and Robbie Ingui who are part of Artistic Neon Incorporated by Gaspar and Son,
[00:01:52]
{SPEAKER name="Elena Martínez"}
and they are located in Glendale?
[00:01:54]
[[Cross talk]]
{SPEAKER name="Gaspar Ingui"}
Right.
{SPEAKER name="Robbie Ingui"}
Ridgewood.
[[Cross talk]]
{SPEAKER name="Elena Martínez"}
Ridgewood, which is kind of like on the border of Queens and Brooklyn?
[[Cross talk]]
{SPEAKER name="Gaspar and Robbie Ingui"}
Right, right.
[00:01:58]
{SPEAKER name="Elena Martínez"}
And also we have members of Tats Cru, a mural collective in the Bronx, from Hunts Point in the Bronx.
[00:02:07]
{SPEAKER name="Elena Martínez"}
We have Bio, Nicer and BG183.
[00:02:11]
{SPEAKER name="Elena Martínez"}
And I just wanna --I'll start with a couple questions first with the neon sign makers.
[00:02:16]
{SPEAKER name="Elena Martínez"}
And if you can just first explain a little bit about neon work and how it is commonly used --
[00:02:24]
