Dear Mr. Volk:

From an item in the American Art News of last week, I see that the National Academy of Design has made another purchase from the Henry Ward Banger Fund -- a painting by W. Granville Smith entitled "Gray Day," which is one of the paintings in the Academy's present exhibition. Will you not be so good as to inspect this picture and let me have your opinion as to its desirability for the National Gallery of Art. I am writing to ask Mr. Blashfield to do likewise.

With the assurance of my appreciation of your cooperation in this matter, I am,

Very truly yours,
C.D Walcott
Secretary.

Mr. Douglas Volk,
