SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION
UNITED STATES NATIONAL MUSEUM
WASHINGTON D.C.

August 16, 1980.

My dear Mr. Volk:

Following my letter of the 2rd instant sent to you on the 10th with apologies for delay, I have to report that the Poilu costume of 1917 which you requested for a few weeks has been obtained as a loan from the Quartermaster General and is packed ready for shipment. It has occurred to me that you may not at present be working on the Pershing portrait and therefore will not care to have the Poilu costume sent to you at center Lovell. Please let me know to which address you wish it forwarded.

The complete costume is furnished, but not the pack or the rifle. We may be able to get a pack if you need one. The gun can possibly be obtained by you from some one nearby.

Very sincerely yours,

W. H. Holmes

Director,
National Gallery of Art.
