but a R.R. Station, situated in a basin among rocks, & surrounded by mountains with but few facilities for making a comfortable livelihood, except for those who fortunately have employment on the R.R.

There is quite a number of aged people, widows and orphans here among the colored people, out of employment & often unable to work, who are barely able to keep soul and body together and if they get no assistance they must starve. Since I have been here I have spent the last dollar of my monthly salary for their necessities & then they suffer. Besides these, there is another class here, who went out on to the neighboring plantations
