Dear Sir
I enclose to you the letter I have just written to Gen. Swayne. It will explain itself & save me the labor of writing over again the same to you. So far as may be needful & necessary I count on your kind sympathy in the matter of an application. Things seemed to be working most happily - the people were quiet & orderly & the pupils had progressed so nicely that some were engaged in teaching. The hostility of the whites seemed to have been wonderfully mollified if not entirely done away and notwithstanding the absence of the troops - the superintendent
