as he is, however, he makes a good pioneer & I hope you have use for him in that capacity. He is now thrown out of employment, a circumstance of no little concern in this place in these hard times. Mr. Williams has lived in Eatan, about 50 miles down the river. Have you a school there? A few words in regard to the white school of this place under your patronage.
While in conversation with a Mr. Dr. Beatie, a member of the Episcopal Church & the husband of Miss Bird's sister, he had a good deal to say about "our parish school". [you are doubtless aware that every religious denomination has its own school] Upon inquiring who taught his parish school he replied "Miss Bird". "Miss Bird!" says I "she is teaching our Government school." He hesitatingly replied he believed Dr. Easter was obtaining some money from the Government - "but" he says "40 Dollars is a mere trifle which will hardly pay for her board."
From this & other observations, I have come to the following conclusions: that the 13 or 14 children Miss. Bird has been or rather is teaching belong to the Episcopal Parish & that they were not selectded irrespective of religious denominations; moreover, that the Government, in paying her 40 dollars per month are supporting the Episcopal Parish School
