E.P. Smith's answer to your communication of March 23d will doubtless be received before this reaches you. The condition of our treasury is such that it is impossible to push forward new enterprises as vigorously as we desire. The funds have been provided for the purchase of the Talladega property at the price you mention in your last: $8,000. one half to be paid by Gen. Swayne from Gov. funds and one half a A.M.A. Whenever the consent of the trustees can be received I will either in person or through an authorized agent attend to the purchase and put a suitable man in charge of the building to provide at once for needed repairs so that the institution can be thrown open for the accommodation of students the 1st of next September or October.
