Maj. Gen W. Swayne:
Dear Sir I am leaving some land in small lots from 40 to 80 acres each for the term of ten years to Freedmen & expect to get a considerable settlement of them. I have given them a large building that with a little repairing & fitting up will also be sufficient for their religious meetings. I propose to give them a lot, conveyed to trustees by legal title for their use for a burying ground & also a lot for church & school house & will help them save more to get started. I believe they desire to educate their children but they have not the means to pay a teacher. The object of this writing is to ascertain whether any funds can be provided by government or otherwise to pay a teacher. I think I can find a man who would consent to teach if the salary could be paid: a son of mine who has never been educated in the principles of rebellion; but has been taught to love & respect his country & her government & institutions & prize them as worth preserving; better than all others. If you can favor us with an early answer to this application it will be gladly received.
