Dear Sir
Yours of April 27th is at hand - There has been the number of fourty three Scholars handed in to me - that can go to school during the crop season - and a much larger number will be able to go as soon as the crops are made - There can be a house obtained about 1/4 mile from town

It is not a very suitable house but it will answer to teach in till the crops are made and then the Colored people intend to build a house for School purposes - I do not know that I can obtain board for the teacher anywhere else except at my own house. I will see however that whoever you send shall have comfortable Quarters - I feel it my duty in connection with this matter to say to you that this is a very strong Rebel place -

During the war it was the Rendezvous of the Guerillas, Murderers - & Robbers of the Rebel army driven out of Tennessee & North Alabama - Many of these men are still here and threats to murder prominent Union men are freely made - Though as yet there has been no open outbreak. There seems to be a strong desire to get back into the Union, but, They don't want the black man to have any
