PREFACE

My goal has been to confront an artist and his art directly. In this paper, I have focused on a particular aspect of the paintings of a local artist, Melesio (Mel) Casas. Here, my interest lies in the importance of "idea," symbolism, and theory to Mel Casas.
There are two individuals who have been extremely helpful to me in writing this paper. The first is Mrs. Rowe, my art history teacher, who has guided me in my choice of topic and my research. I have also been helped in my paper a great deal by Mr. Casas himself. He has been quite helpful and very cooperative in allowing me to interview him, at which time he provided me with an extensive analysis of many of his works. Mr. Casas also [[strikethrough]] loaned [[/strikethrough]] leant me slides of all of his paintings, from which I have made several copies for my paper. Additionally, I have made important use of the San Antonio Library and the Witte Museum in San Antonio.
