Six 52-minute videocassettes that document the sweeping story of the American West as seen through the eyes of its myth makers and mythologizers.

THE WEST OF THE IMAGINATION

The West of awesome landscapes and fearsome dangers, of Indians and pioneers, of outlaws and lawmen, cowboys and businessmen, explorers and hunters, seekers after fame or gold or glory.

The story of the West is the national myth of America. It is the myth of romantic Indians, taller-than-life heroes and villains, of nature grander and fiercer than nature itself, of untold wealth and epic human endurance.

This is the West of the imagination, the West of the historians with paintbrush, explorers with camera, chroniclers with celluloid, portrayed vividly, accurately, with a broad range of knowledge and understanding of this, our heritage.

This new documentary series tells the story of the myth makers through the myths they created-in oil or ink, in still photographs or moving picture film. Filmed on location, the programs survey the historical and cultural landscape of the West and in docudramatic reenactments show the mythical moments and the legendary heroes and heroines who dominate the West of the imagination.
