THE BISON HUNTERS
As the East became industrialized and urbanized in the nineteenth century, the mythologizing of the Indian began; while the prophets in their westward expansion continued to do battle with any Indians in their path, Easterners began to think of the Indian as the noble savage. In this program, the painter George Carlin describes his enchantment with the life of the Plains Indians in the mid-19th century; what he notices are cultural oddities, not human similarities. THE TRAIL OF TEARS
As explorers and pioneers traveled further and further west, the urge and the technological means to expand led inevitably to the seizure of Indian lands and the destruction of Indian culture.(13 minutes, color)

THE WARPATH
Indians were the major obstacle to westward expansion. The pioneering American spirit overcame all obstacles-including the treaties which had reserved these lands to Indians. The Western lands were just too fertile and the drive for riches too strong, and so, one after the other, the treaties were ignored or abrogated. In the resulting bloodshed, the Indians won some battles but lost the war.(13 minutes, color)

THE DEATH OF THE BISON
When the bison is gone, the end of the Red Man will be near said the Indian prophecy. The stories of the Indian chiefs, of Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull and their great battles, are legendary, but the facts are not so romantic and the events at Wounded Knee in 1972 demonstrate that the problem is still with us.(13 minutes, color)
