Dear CARA Audiences,

Chicano Art: Resistance and Affirmation, 1965-1985 (CARA) is a national exhibition organized by the UCLA Wight Art Gallery and the CARA National Advisory Committee. After opening in Los Angeles, this landmark exhibition will travel nationally and internationally for three years. As chair of the CARA National Honorary Committee, I have committed by involvement and invite you to participate in making this project a resounding success.

This is the first national comprehensive art exhibition devoted to exploring the complex relationship between Chicano art and the Chicano civil rights movement, el Movimiento. A multi-disciplinary approach was used for the exhibition and the catalogue, as well as for the educational and programming activities, which include a public school curriculum and presentations of Chicano poetry, literature, music, film, and theater.

The planning process for this exhibition has been unique. Over fifty Chicano scholars and artists from across the country developed the scope of the exhibition and its components. A selection committee was formed to encourage an expansive curatorial perspective, a three-member executive committee oversees the entire project, and nine regional committees allow for national input.

Your interest and participation in this exhibition greatly increases our ability to reach a broad audience and to create a significant national and international reception for the Chicano art movement.

I thank you for taking the time to learn about this important and historic endeavor.

Sincerely,

Edward James Olmos
