EDUARDO DIAZ: Prior to becoming director of the City’s
Dept. of Arts & Cultural Affairs in 1989, Eduardo headed
EI Paso’s Cultural Affairs Council and was also Director
from 1983 — 1988 of San Antonio's “CineFestival,” the
oldest and largest international Latino film and video
exhibition in the U.S.

TOMAS YBARRA FRAUSTO: Native San Antonian
‘Tomas Ybarra Frausto currently serves as Associate
Director for the Arts & Humanities at the Rockefeller
Foundation in NewYork with principle responsibilty for the Museum Program and the Divisions’ Residency Program
in the Humanities. He was on the original steering
committee for CARA and is an author in the catalogue.

RICARDO ROMO: A native of San Antonio, Ricardo is a
distinguished historian and mural art documentarian. He
has been Associate Professor of History at U.T., Austin
since 1980 and has published two important books about
‘contemporary Mexican American history. He has one of
the most extensive slide collections of Chicano mural art
ever assembled. Don't miss his June 6 museum
presentation!

IGNACIO "TACHE" TORRES: Tache is founder of the Community Cultural Arts Organization, a barrio-based non-profit arts center founded in 1979, aimed at getting youths off the streets and involved in painting murals in west-side housing projects. Tache is presently Director of the Murals Program at the city's Dept. of Parks and Recreation. 

ENEDINA CASARES VASQUEZ: Enedina and her husband Arturo are native San Antonians who have gained local, national and international recognition with their coloful folk nichos and crosses produced as "ENEART".

NEPHTALI DE LEON: A native of Laredo raised in the fields of Texas as a migrant worker, Nephtali is an internationally known poet, children's author and muralist. He has published nine books of poetry and prose, including "I Will Catch the Sun" and "I Color my Garden." Two of his murals are located in San Antonio.

GILBERTO CÁRDENAS: Gilbert is an acclaimed sociologist, a distinguished photographer, lecturer, editor, and promoter of Mexican and Chicano arts. He has been Associate Professor of Sociology at U.T., Austin since 1975 where he is also Director of the Center for Mexican American Studies. Gilberto is also founder and owner of "Galeria Sin Fronteras," an Austin art gallery.

Biographies

JACINTO QUIRARTE: A professor for twenty years, Jacinto is Dean of the College of Fine Arts at UTSA and Director of the Research Center for the Visual Arts, specializing in History and Criticism of Mexican and Chicano Art. He is guest curator for the CARA exhibit. 

TERRI YBAÑEZ: Terri is a native San Antonio painter. She has a B.A. in Studio Art from Trinity University and her M.A. in Bicultural/Bilingual Studies from UTSA. She is moving to San Fransisco in July to pursue her art career.

PEDRO RODRIGUEZ: Pedro is a scholar, painter and multi-cultural arts advocate who has served on numerous arts boards, panels and committees. He has been Executive Director of the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center for ten years and is also a member of the CARA Steering Committee.

JOSÉ RIVERA: José has distinguished himself as the only Chicano sculptor of the region to work exclusively in mesquite. He has a B.A. from Texas A & l in Kingsville and has taught art, both in Oakland, California and in San Antonio.

SYLVIA OROZCO: Sylvia is a leading Texas mural artist from Austin. She is co-founder, co-director of Mexic-Arte, a ten year old Austin-based organization dedicated to promoting Chicano & Latino visual & performing arts.

RAMÓN VASQUEZ y SANCHEZ: Ramón is the Arts Program Director of Centro Cultural Aztlán, a fifteen year old city-funded cultural arts organization. He is also an accomplished painter and illustrator.

MELESIO CASAS: Mel is one of the original members of the "Con Safo" group which was formed in 1967 in San Antonio. He is an internationally recognized painter, having exhibited in major cities in the U.S. and Mexico over the past thirty three years. He was also Chairman of the Visual Arts & Technology Dept. at SAC from 1977 to 1990. Mel currently resides in Sicily.

LOUIS LEROY: Louis has had a dual career as both an artist and arts administrator. A resident of San Antonio since 1983, he owns and runs "Salsa Graphics," his art business and "Cruzitas," a newly opened art gallery.

DIANA RODRIGUEZ CÁRDENAS: Diana is an accomplished painter with a degree from La Academia de San Carlos (UNAM) in Mexico City, 1969 and an MFA from UTSA in 1986. Her work has been widely exhibited here and abroad. 

ROSIE CASTRO: A native San Antonian and a well-known community activist, Rosie was Bexar County Chairperson for La Raza Unida Party from 1972-74. She is currently Ombudsoman for the S.A. Housing Authority.

LAURA CODINA: A bilingual educator for ten years with the Edgewood I.S.D., Laura is currently a freelance poet, writer and performing artist.

ANGELA DE HOYOS: Angela has been a leading poet from San Antonio for twenty five years. She has authored several books of poetry, including the critically acclaimed "Woman, Woman". She is co-publisher/general editor of M&A Editions and is founder/director of "Huehuetitlan" a San Antonio literary journal. 

EDUARDO GARZA: Eduardo has been active in media and performing arts for over twenty years. He recently published his first book of poetry "Prisoner of the Now." He is a member of El Comite del Movimiento Chicano de san Antonio Memorabilia Exhibit at CARA.

JOSE MONTALVO: José, the Black Hat Poet, has been a fixture in the local poetry scene since 1971. His poetry is mainly a call for justice, even if it must "expose brownfaced oppurtunists." Jose has no sacred burros.

TRINIDAD SANCHES Jr: Trinidad is a nationally known Chicano poet, hailing from Detroit, Michigan. He has participated extensively in literary events across the country. Trinidad has published six books, including the highly acclaimed "Why am I so Brown?" and "Authentic Chicano Food is Hot!"

BEVERLY SANCHEZ PADILLA: Beva's career in cultural media arts spans twenty two years. Trained in film and radio, she is producer/writer of many educational, commercial, cable and public T.V. programs. She is author/producer of "La Guadalupe que camina" and "Mali & Maya."

DAVID ZAMORA CASAS: David is a new breed of Chicano artist who combines painting, moving sculpture, music, poetry and performance art into his original pieces. His work deals with today's social & cultural issues.

GCAC -- Grupo Ánimo: Grupo Ánimo is Teatro Guadalupe's resident youth group, formed in November 1992. The company writes its own material and shares in all aspects of production. Their work tables contemporary Chicano issues.

C.I.A. (Chicanos in the Arts): The C.I.A was created in 1992/93 at San Antonio College to provide alternative theatre oppurtunities to Latino students interested in producing plays relevent to their culture, language and lifestyle.
