We have before us an abundance of art; a plentiful bounty, a copious cornucopia, a prodigious package, almost a surfeit, of art.
In short, we have more art than you can shake a stick at.
There are eight exhibitions opening this week, one of those accidents of timing that can challenge even the most dedicated and determined gallery goer.
It is however, a reminder of the vast and diverse talent in this city's visual arts community.
Here's the lineup: the Sol Del Rio Gallery opens a two-person show today featuring new works on paper by local painter, illustrator and graphic designer Lyn Belisle, and watercolors by University of Texas at Austin art professor Michael Frary.
Opening Monday in the 110 Broadway Building is "Festival de Artes," an exhibit sponsored by the Ford Motor Co. featuring the work of 20 local Hispanic artists.
Opening Thursday at the Mexican Cultural Institute is "Expresiones Hispanas" - the 1988/89 Coors National Hispanic Art Exhibit and Tour. The show, which is co-sponsored by The Light, features the work of 50 Hispanic artists, including San Antonians Miguel Cortinas, Louis LeRoy and Mary Louise Lopez. Also opening at the institute will be a one man show by Alberto Migangos, a native of Mexico and longtime resident of San Antonio.
Friday is the day to wear your most comfortable walking shoes. The Blue Star Art Space is opening "Third Coast Review: A Look at Art in Texas," work by 68 contemporary artists including San Antonians Mel Casa, Richard Thompson and Kathy Vargas, and former residents Steve Daly and Tony Rosato. Also on exhibit will be recent works by UTSA art professor Charles Field.
Also opening Friday, at San Antonio College's Koehler House, is "Art Reverberations," a National Women's Caucus for Art exhibition sponsored by the local WCA chapter and including 15 local artists. San Antonians Jane Randall and Vivian Yatteau are among seven artists awarded prizes.
There are two solo exhibitions opening Friday as well: at the Read Stremmel Gallery, San Antonio Art Institute dean James Kuiper will exhibit recent paintings; at Centero Cultural Aztlan's Expresion Gallery at Las Palmas Mall, Mila Castro will exhibit mixed media drawings.
