SCRIPT FOR " BIRTH OF A BRONZE"


A SCULPTURE MUST CONTINUE TO GROW; TO FIND NEW IMAGES THAT EXPRESS HIS IDEAS.

MY FAITH IS IN THE INDOMITABLE SPIRIT OF MAN.

EVERY SCULPTURE I MAKE IS CONCEIVED IN A SPIRIT OF OPTIMISM.

I WANT MY SCULPTURE TO GIVE THE EFFECT OF SEEMING TO TURN - TO IMPEL THE SPECTATOR TO WALK AROUND IT. IN OTHER WORDS, IT IS THE ILLUSION OF MOVEMENT THAT I SEEK.

I WAS VERY INFLUENCED BY CUBISM. I AM STILL A CUBIST. WHAT I LEARNED FROM CUBISM REMAINS THE GRAMMAR AND SYNTAX OF THE ART.

GRADUALLY, I BECAME OBSESSED WITH THE NEED FOR A MUCH LOOSER HANDLING OF CLAY - I HOPED TO FIND SOME WAY OF OPENING UP ITS SOLID CORE TO PENETRATIONS OF LIGHT AND SPACE. 

ALL MY LIFE I HAVE READ THE BIBLE - ESPECIALLY THE PENTATEUCH. IT IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE THAT I ASSOCIATED, SUBCONSCIOUSLY, JACOB'S NAME WITH MY OWN. BUT THE REAL STORY IS FOR MANKIND. MAN IS WRESTLING WITH THE ANGEL; IT IS A TREMENDOUS STRUGGLE BUT HE WINS AND IS BLESSED.

I WAS LIVING IN EUROPE BEFORE WORLD WAR II. THE RISE OF HITLER, THE POLITICAL TENSIONS IN FRANCE, THE FEAR OF WAR, THE GREAT DEPRESSION - ALL HAD THEIR IMPACT IN MY SUBSEQUENT SCULPTURE. I SOUGHT HEROIC THEMES TO HELP SYMBOLIZE THE VICTORY OF MANKING OVER THESE TERRIBLE FORCES.
