JACQUES LIPCHITZ ART FOUNDATION

NEWSLETTER

President: BRUCE BASSETT

Obviously, a project of such magnitude will not be completed, nor even planned completly [[completely]], in a short time. Many factors must be considered---acquisition of the site, design of the museum, plan of the educational aspects, staff, and so on, to say nothing of the financial and fund-raising aspects.

But great projects do begin on a small scale, and it is with great enthusiasm that I report to you that we have begun. We have received an individual donation that has permitted us to begin the photographing and annotating of the collection. To this date more than 800 pieces have been photographed. Mr. Lipchitz, who is now in Italy, has seen the first group of photographs and reports to us that he is delighted. He has begun the important task of annotation and is eager to continue.

We are concentrating our efforts now on this first phase of the project---photographing, cataloging, and appraising the collection. We also hope to begin the cataloging of Lipchitz' own plasters and recording on film and tape his description of his life and work. We also hope to retain an expert to begin the job of evaluating and organizing the collection so that it can ultimately be presented in its most meaningful form. This first programing stage is necessary to the total plan of the museum, but it is also important as a contribution to art history in its own right.

Our immediate goal, then, is to raise the $150,000 we estimate will be required to complete the programing stage of the project.

We are also trying to build our own organization to handle the demands of the project. We have applied for corporate status as an educational, nonprofit institution. Our Board of Trustees consists of Bruce Bassett, President; Helen Fink, Secretary; Thomas H. Petschek, Treasurer; Carol and Howard Levine and Anne Malarkey, Trustees. As you know, I am a unit manager at NBC-TV and worked closely with Mr. Lipchitz last year as President of the Hastings Creative Arts Council when he donated a piece of sculpture to the Village. Mrs. Fink was also instrumental in the success of that effort. Mr. Petschek is vice-president of Manufacture's Hanover Trust. Mr. Levine is on the public relations staff of Eastern Airlines and the Levines have co-authored a forthcoming book on public relations for nonprofit organizations. Mrs. Malarkey is a member of the Board of Trustees of the village of Hastings. Representing us as counsel are Paul Edelman of Kreindler and Kreindler and Norman Fink of Lans and Fink. Serving as advisor to our group is Stephen Weil of the Whitney Museum.
