Norman Parish, a resident of Gaithersburg, MD and Homewood, IL will host an opening reception of his work in oils on Friday, February 2 from 7:3-9:30 p.m. at The Gallery Next Door, 20 Broadway, Frostburg.

Mr. Parish is a graduate of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and University of Chicago. He has paintings in both corporate and private collections, including those of the Chicago City Bank, the Chicago Hilton Towers Hotel's Stevens gallery, the collection of Mr. Arthur Ashe, to name but a few.

Parish studied under several established painters including Paul Wieghardt and Leroy Meiman. Of his own works, Parish says, "I work in oils on canvas and paint recognizable stylized subject matter. I call it "Stylized Realism." For the past 30 years I have developed a style of painting that ranges from recognizable subject matter to abstractions concentrating on color harmonies. My work varies in subject matter as well as moods. My paintings may begin with an idea or a special feeling that is translated on canvas in sometimes bold brush strokes or soft color impressions that turn the picture plane into an enjoyable visual experience of color, line and form. At present the typical subject matter if my paintings is taken from rural panoramas without emphasis on detail in soft vibrant pastel color."

Most recently Parish has discovered the beauty of Western Maryland and has created a new series of works based on the landscape of Allegany County, including a prismatic view of Frostburg painted in August of 1990. The show corresponds with Black History Month which is celebrated in February.

The public is invited to meet Norman Parish on February 2nd and enjoy the range of his painting mastery. His works will be on exhibit at the Gallery Next Door through February 28th, 10-5 weekdays, 10-1 Saturdays, and evenings by appointment. Phone 301-689-1234 for further information.
