[[margin note]] —Cole's death [[/margin note]]

New York Sunday afternoon Feb 13 1848

To the Council of the
National Academy of Design.

Gentlemen.

It becomes my painful duty to announce to you the receipt of the intelligence of the death of Thomas Cole, one of my dearest friends, one of our fellow associates in founding this Institution— A friend deeply endeared to us all by those high and christian qualities of mind and heart. Which ever distinguished him through life - as a dutiful Son, an honourable man and an affectionate husband and father —— As an Artist preeminently an ornament to his Country and his profession.

In offering you these few and feeble remarks on the merits of our deceased friend, and fellow Artist, permit me to express the hope that all that can be done by as, to under a proper tribute of respect to the memory of the deceased should be done and that the Academicians be immediately concerned for that purpose

I am Gent Your bt.Svt.
