I have so far illustrated my subject by quantities only. There is yet another and [[strikethrough]] an equally [[/strikethrough]] powerfull agent [[strikethrough]]with correctness of line[[/strikethrough]] requisite to complete the truthfull representation of there form, namely, Light and Shade. Add this [[strikethrough]]quality[[/strikethrough]] to the [[strikethrough]]forms [[/strikethrough]] illustrations I have also given and you have all that is requisite to complete them, so far as form [[strikethrough]]irrespective of Colour[[/strikethrough]] is alone concerned [[strikethrough]]By this,[[/strikethrough]] The separation of which by the eye from the colour of the object to be represented is one of the most important studies of the artist, and one to be acquired before he can accomplish any great excellence in his art. Form and light and shadow will give the full representation of the form of objects, as may be seen by the beautiful specimens of engraving, which so fully satisfy the eye. Colour never can produce such results. It will add to and embelish, but on the hue and light and shadow alone is the object represented dependant for the [[strikethrough]]form[[/strikethrough]] truthful representation of its form. By light and shade the cube I have before given, is made not only clear in its form, [[strikethrough]]but[[/strikethrough]] elevation, distance, place, solidity and cleanup of representation is given, this by shadowing the sides and top as its plane is change an as the angles recedes from the eye, or intercept the rays flight in their passage. we obtain its truthful representation as the flat surface and by the shadow it casts on the ground it stands on. its due projection and solidity,- for this cube Peter Schlemel like would be seriously inconvenced without its shadow. [[Image]] The shadow side it will be observed is a degree lighter as it comes in contact with its shadow on the ground. This is occasioned by a degree of reflected light [[strikethrough]]cast [[/strikethrough]] given off by the ground. on which it stands, here again has apparent darkness to be penetrated. Yet if the eye be practiced and will be found on close examination to exert in all such cases, the student must again be cautious to use his eyes. This cube form may be multiplied. basic, and complicated Thus several may be drawn at different distances. Two or three standing together with shadows cast from one on the other. thus as at No1. [[image]] or more [[image]] complicated at No2. by this aid the circle as before given may be made a concave or convex surface a tunnel or a Globe.
