"From the not far distant days of ragtime to the present astonishing - even shocking - development of jazz, one senses the stirrings of that spirit of independence which is the fundamental - the necessary element, sine dubio - it all eventually significant achievement . Of course, there popular musical developments are, for the most part, entirely lacking in any refinement of the spirit . The evolutions they express are cheap, common & poor - although the product is frequently vulgar in issuance, it is at least vital. It has the spark, the bold suggestion in it, of freedom from tradition."
